Terminal over SSH: typing lag and command time

deploy@vps:~$

Click the terminal and type, or press a command button. Characters appear only after the round trip, and each command reports how long its output took.

Blue bar: largest paint. Green bar: fully loaded. Click a row to use that latency. Region latencies are rough typical values and depend on your visitors’ ISPs.

What would help most

    Measure a real server

Most VPS providers offer a test IP or looking-glass page. Ping it, then run this against a trial server and copy the numbers into the sliders.

    ping -c 10 YOUR_SERVER_IP curl -o /dev/null -s -w "dns:%{time_namelookup} connect:%{time_connect} tls:%{time_appconnect} ttfb:%{time_starttransfer} total:%{time_total}\n" https://YOUR_SITE

Educational model: DNS, TCP and TLS 1.3 each cost one round trip (TLS 1.2 costs two; HTTP/3 combines transport and crypto into one). Transfers include TCP slow start and a loss penalty. Real results vary, so use this to compare options rather than as an exact prediction.
